The plaque reads:
"In this room on March 2, 1835, Joseph Howe publisher of the weekly Newspaper, The Nova Scotian, defended himself in an action for criminal libel. His masterly defence not only won him a triumphant acquittal, but established, forever, the freedom of the press in this country.
This tablet was unveiled by his honour the honourable E C Plow CBE DSO CD Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia
August 16, 1961"
Note: The Legislative Library, located on the second floor between the Red Chamber and Legislative Assembly, was originally the home of the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia, until the court outgrew the space. It was the site of Joseph Howe's 1835 trial for seditious libel.
