Pampa's Lovett Library is the location of this sculpture that was dedicated during the library's 50th anniversary celebration. A lifesize woman and young boy are sitting on top of a 4' high stone foundation. The woman's right hand is resting on a book on her lap, with her left arm around the child. Her feet are crossed as her legs hang over the foundation. Her hair is pulled back and up into a bun. The boy is sitting semi-crossed leg, looking up at the mother, with his right hand laying to his side, and his left hand resting on his left leg.
From the City of Pampa website:
"The Lesson" a life-size bronze of a mother reading to her young child, is one of two sculptures that were formally dedicated at Lovett Memorial Library, 111 N. Houston, on January 9, 2005.
The dedication of this sculpture and its sister sculpture occurred during the 50th anniversary celebration of the library. Both were gift to Pampa from Texas Panhandle native R.L. Franklin in honor of the pioneering spirit of the women who helped settle this area, including his mother, Louise Franklin, and three other Pampa women, Virginia Green, Betty Henderson and Annie Buckler. "The Lesson" by Don Ray of Channing, Texas is located near the library entrance.
