This cemetery has a general and a private section. There is also a separate section for children and Muslims. There is an urn place, a scattering forest and a memorial.

On June 26, 1829, the foundation stone for the gatehouse was laid. That was done by Jr. Gijsbert Cornelis Fontein Verschuir, the mayor's youngest son, who was then 14 years old. The memorial stone can still be seen in the underpass in the gatehouse. Another stone recalls the fact that the city master builder Willem Hamer (1773-1858) supervised the work in the years 1829 and 1830.

In the autumn of 1830, the construction of the new general cemetery on the Westerweg was completed. Fontein Verschuir was the first to buy a burial vault, near the entrance on the edge of section A. When the mayor died a few years later, on 8 January 1838, he was buried in the cellar (grave number A 6). The cemetery was officially opened on September 15, 1830, followed by the first burial the following day. That was for the girl Maria Petrolie on the general Catholic part. On September 24, the first own Protestant grave was issued. The funeral was reportedly in the evening and involved two hearers with hearse. The grave, four deep, cost 22.85 guilders at the time. The surviving documents do not show that many funerary monuments were placed in the early years.

Special funerary monuments
Despite the fact that the funerary monuments are not included in the protection, there are many interesting monuments to be found, not only because of the design but also because of the people who are buried there. A large number of the funerary monuments have been described in a report, as indicated earlier. The majority of the funerary monuments selected for the report are located in sections A, B, G and C. An overview of some of the most beautiful funerary monuments is given in a separate article. A number of funerary monuments related to the Second World War are described below.

war graves
Besides several graves of unrecognized war victims that are hardly known, there are also a few Dutch and allied war graves on the cemetery. The grave monument for Gerrit Zandbergen is still present at the cemetery.
