Elias Velasquez Chavez emigrated from Guatemala to the United States in 2017 with a goal to "make a good home for his family", a wife and two teen sons. On May 22, 2020, upon leaving work, he was killed by a hit-and-run driver in Middletown, Rhode Island. An initial
report said he left Chili's after his shift between 11:00PM and midnight and was riding his bike home. The accident site is just 500 feet south of the restaurant. Thanks to an anonymous tip, The Middletown Police Department made an
arrest three weeks later.
Forty-year-old Sr. Chavez is remembered with a ghost bike at the corner of Harbor Village Drive and West Main Road/R.I. 114. The all white painted bicycle is secured to a galvanized sign post along the west sidewalk. Colorful artificial flowers cascade down the pole and through the bike frame. Accompanying the memorial is a light brown, floppy-eared plush rabbit. A white plaque attached to the cross bar is engraved on both sides:
