NL Bij de parkeerplaats van het restaurant Juffrouw Tok staat een simpel bakstenen monument met een stenen plaque. De plaque heeft eerst aan de gevel van het café-restaurant gehangen maar is in 2016 in dit monument verwerkt. Het herinnert aan de drie Nederlandse militairen die hier zijn gesneuveld tijdens gevechten in mei 1940.

Vroeg in de ochtend op vrijdag 10 mei 1940 valt het Duitse leger Nederland binnen. Na bij Westervoort de IJssel overgestoken te zijn, trekken zij via Arnhem en Ede richting de Grebbelinie die zich ten westen van Ede bevindt.

Het 4e Regiment Huzaren (militairen te paard of op de fiets) moet de Duitse opmars vertragen tussen Arnhem en Ede, zodat er tijd is de hoofdverdediging in de Grebbelinie in paraatheid te brengen. Het regiment huzaren moet proberen om zich met zo min mogelijk verliezen terug te trekken achter de Grebbelinie, waar ze opnieuw zullen worden ingezet.

Vier gemotoriseerde huzaren vormen de achterhoede van het regiment. Deze groep staat onder commando van kornet Graaf van Limburg Stirum. Zij moeten de terugtocht van het regiment beschermen en nemen daarvoor positie in op de bovenverdieping van Herberg Zuid-Ginkel.

In de middag van vrijdag 10 mei komt plots een sterk bewapende gemotoriseerde SS-formatie uit het bos tevoorschijn vanuit Arnhem op de Rijksweg 24 (nu N224). Het is een verkenningseenheid van het SS Regiment Der Führer. Onmiddellijk opent de groep Nederlandse huzaren met hun lichte mitrailleur het vuur op de Duitsers. Die draaien direct om en verdwijnen weer in het bos.

De kornet besluit na enige tijd om volgens opdracht terug te trekken. Maar dan komen onverwacht Duitse motorrijders vanaf de Wijde Veldweg langs de schaapskooi richting de herberg. Ze zijn onder dekking van de bomenrij langs de schapenweide naar de schaapskooi gereden. De kornet opent nu zelf met de lichte mitrailleur opnieuw het vuur, zodat zijn mannen weg kunnen komen. Zijn munitie raakt op en hij moet zich overgeven. Hij gaat naar beneden maar wordt bij de voordeur zonder pardon neergeschoten. Zijn mannen, korporaal Bonkerk en huzaar Dijkers, overkomt hetzelfde bij de zijdeur.

De vierde man, huzaar Kuperus, wordt binnen verborgen door herbergier Kramer. Kort daarop komt de omgeving van de herberg onder Nederlands artillerievuur te liggen. De Duitsers trekken zich terug richting Planken Wambuis. Dat geeft Huzaar Kuperus de kans te ontkomen. In burgerkleding en op een geleende fiets weet hij via de Kreelseweg de eigen linies te bereiken.

The plaque was first hung on the facade of the café-restaurant, but was incorporated into this monument in 2016. Early in the morning on Friday May 10, 1940, the German army invades the Netherlands. After crossing the IJssel at Westervoort, they travel via Arnhem and Ede towards the Grebbe Line, which is located west of Ede.

The 4th Regiment Huzaren (military soldiers on horseback or on bicycles) had to slow down the German advance between Arnhem and Ede, so that there is time to prepare the main defense in the Grebbe Line. The regiment of hussars must try to withdraw with as few losses as possible behind the Grebbe Line, where they will be deployed again.

Four motorized hussars form the rear of the regiment. This group is commanded by cornet Graaf van Limburg Stirum. They have to protect the regiment's retreat and for this they occupy a position on the top floor of Herberg Zuid-Ginkel.

In the afternoon of Friday 10 May a strongly armed motorized SS formation suddenly emerges from the forest from Arnhem on Rijksweg 24 (now N224). It is a reconnaissance unit of the SS Regiment Der Führer. The group of Dutch hussars immediately opened fire on the Germans with their light machine gun. They immediately turn around and disappear into the forest again.

After some time, the cornet decides to withdraw as instructed. But then unexpectedly German motorcyclists come from the Wijde Veldweg past the sheepfold towards the inn. They drove under cover of the row of trees along the sheep meadow to the sheepfold. The cornet now opens fire again with the light machine gun, so that his men can get away. His ammunition runs out and he has to surrender. He goes downstairs but is unceremoniously shot at the front door. His men, Corporal Bonkerk and Hussar Dijkers, do the same at the side door.

The fourth man, Hussar Kuperus, is hidden inside by innkeeper Kramer. Shortly afterwards, the area around the inn came under Dutch artillery fire. The Germans retreat towards Planken Wambuis. That gives Hussar Kuperus the chance to escape. In civilian clothes and on a borrowed bicycle, he manages to reach his own lines via the Kreelseweg.
