Arising from humble beginnings in Charleston, SC, Ernest Just fulfilled his desire for education by attending several local and state schools, eventually achieving a license to teach at the age of fifteen. His desire to further his own education led him north to New Hampshire where he attended Kimball Union Academy and eventually Dartmouth studying everything from biology to the classics.

Finding he liked biology more than history or literature, Just pursued a PhD at the University of Chicago working alongside zoologist and pioneering embryologist Frank R. Lillie. In order to pay the bills during this time, Just worked at Howard University in Washington DC teaching various subjects and heading up the department of biology and zoology.

Most of Ernest Just’s experimental work was in the area of fertilization, especially that of certain marine invertebrates such as clam worms, sea urchins and sand dollars. His work was carried out at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, and the Stazione Zoologica in Naples, Italy. He was also the first recipient of the prestigious Spingarn Medal, awarded each year to "the man or woman of African descent who shall have made the highest achievement during the preceding year or years in any honorable field of human endeavor."
