These statues of Christ and Mary are located at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Cemetery at the north end of North Dorcas Street in Lewistown, Pennsylvania. The statues are on the grave stones for the Rocco family - Frank and Mary (Father and Mother), and Mildred and Rose (Daughters).
They include statues of Christ and Mary standing beside a crucifix, with an angel on either side kneeling with their hands folded in prayer. Under the crucifix is engraved, "Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them."
Christians believe that Jesus Christ is the Word of God made flesh. He was born of the Virgin Mary nearly two thousand years ago in the city of Bethlehem. At about 30 years of age, Jesus began preaching, calling men to repentance and to love of God and neighbor. Within three years of his public ministry beginning, Jesus was arrested, scourged, and crucified. He died on the cross and was laid in a tomb. On the third day, however, He rose from the dead and began appearing to his disciples. He told them to go throughout the word preaching and baptizing. He ascended into heaven and Christians believe that those who believe in Him and follow His commandments will be saved when He comes again to judge the world.
The Blessed Virgin Mary is venerated by Christians as the Mother of the Word Incarnate, Our Lord Jesus Christ. As a young girl betrothed to St. Joseph, Mary was visited by the angel Gabriel and told that she would conceive a son by the Holy Ghost, who would be the Son of God. In humble obedience to the divine messenger, Mary replied, "Behold the handmaid of the Lord, be it done to me according to thy word." In Bethlehem, her Son was born and was adored by shepherds and kings. As is known throughout the world, this Son, Jesus Christ, went on to suffer on the cross and rise again, offering salvation to the world through Him. Mary, who stood by the cross, is sometimes referred to as Our Mother of Sorrows. Today, Mary is venerated as the Mother of God and Queen of Heaven.
