A 1966 Texas Historical Marker on the house notes its status as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark, and it provides a few sound bytes about it and Captain Harris:
State senator, Confederate veteran, lawyer, teacher at Salado College. Birthplace of Harris' grandson, famous World War II general, Walton Harris Walker.
Home was built in 1866 of limestone quarried nearby. Mortar contains horsehair.
The property's Registration Form notes the house's construction of limestone, and while it originally was late Greek Revival in its architecture, the addition of a Queen Anne "inspired" gallery altered its appearance. Its addition to the National Register is due to its being a well-preserved example of early post-Civil War architecture, and Greek Revival was popular at the time that Captain Harris lived and taught in Salado, south of here.
While the provided address is 1001 W Tenth Ave, if that street still exists as such, it is poorly marked. You'll find the house at the back of the property between two parking lots on the university campus. Other than the sign identifying the house by name and noting its provenance, there is no suggestion as for what purpose -- if any -- the university uses it.
