--------------

This memorial column commemorates Geeraert, the military dead and veterans of Nieuwpoort. Hendrik Geeraert (Nieuwpoort, 1863 - Bruges, 1925) had succeeded his father as barge master. Since October 21st 1914 he was a volunteer with the Engineer of the 2nd Army Division, who would serve in the "Service for the Submersion". On that day, together with some soldiers, he opened the sluices of the Old Yser and flooded the Nieuwendamme Creek from the Yser to Saint George. From 26 to 28 October, Karel Cogge tried to realise an additional flood, but it was not enough. In the night of 29-30 October, Geeraert again assisted the military for the successful attempt of inundation by opening the drainage sluice of the Noordvaart, on Cogge's proposal. In December 1914, Geeraert received a French decoration for this. During the rest of the war, Geeraert remained part of the special engineer company that maintained the water works ("Sapeurs-Pontonniers"). In December 1918, he was conceived with the title of "honorary lockkeeper".
