"In December 1883 Vincent left Drenthe for his parental home in Nuenen. A brave step, because Vincent had not been at home with his parents since Christmas 1881 (who were still living in Etten at the time). Vincent did not feel a warm welcome in Nuenen, but he was allowed to stay and set up the mangle room as a studio.

Although the family relationship could have been better, Vincent did not want to leave Nuenen after a short time because he loved the environment and the people so much. Vincent worked diligently in weaving mills, out in the fields and in his studio on studies of Brabant types. He also went out to paint landscapes. The effect of color had his special attention. Vincent's many figure studies resulted in the fact that he, now full of confidence in his own abilities, made a large figure piece: The Potato Eaters."
