"The Nieuwpoort lock complex is better known as “De Ganzepoot” (the crow’s feet), which refers to its overall shape.

This site played a crucial role during the First World War. In October 1914, the opening of the locks caused the flooding of the Yser plain, thus putting an end to the advance of the German troops. Thanks to the support of the locks, the Yser plain remained under water throughout the war.

At the end of 2014, the Westfront Nieuwpoort interpretation center opened here. Here you can find information about the role of the lock complex and the flooding of the plain during the First World War.

The interpretation center also invites you to discover other remnants of the First World War in the region. The Ganzepoot is the ideal starting point to explore the Westhoek and the history of the First World War in this region, from the Belgian coast."

"Six voies navigables se rejoignent dans le complexe , qui sont reliées à la mer du Nord via le Ganzepoot et l' IJzermonding.

Depuis le Langebrug sur le côté ouest du complexe, six œuvres d'art de l'ingénierie hydraulique peuvent être vues dans une forme semi-circulaire (d'où le nom "Ganzepoot"). Ceux-ci assurent alternativement le drainage d'une partie des De Polders et des connexions d'expédition. Le drainage se fait par un déversoir , les bateaux de navigation intérieure traversent une écluse .

Les œuvres d'art originales, datant de la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle, ont été complètement détruites pendant la Première Guerre mondiale . De là, pendant la bataille de l'Yser, la plaine de l'Yser a été inondée pour arrêter l'avancée des Allemands. L'infrastructure a été reconstruite sous une forme légèrement modifiée immédiatement après la fin des hostilités."

Deze site speelde een cruciale rol tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog. In oktober 1914 zorgde de opening van de sluizen ervoor dat de IJzervlakte onder water kwam te staan, waardoor een einde kwam aan de opmars van de Duitse troepen. Dankzij de steun van de sluizen bleef de IJzervlakte de hele oorlog onder water.

Het interpretatiecentrum nodigt u ook uit om andere overblijfselen van de Eerste Wereldoorlog in de regio te ontdekken. De Ganzepoot is de ideale uitvalsbasis om de Westhoek en de geschiedenis van de Eerste Wereldoorlog in deze streek te ontdekken, vanaf de Belgische kust."
