Das LVR-Freilichtmuseum Kommern ist eines der größten Freilichtmuseen Europas und zeigt auf etwa 100 Hektar die Geschichte des Rheinlands. Dazu wurden rund 78 historische Häuser und Gebäude aus verschiedenen Regionen des Rheinlands abgetragen. Anschließend wurden sie anhand ihrer geographischen Herkunft zu Baugruppen zusammengestellt und hier wiederaufgebaut. Die ältesten Häuser stammen aus dem 15. Jahrhundert, die meisten sind aber aus der Preußenzeit (18. bis 19. Jahrhundert). Die meisten Gebäude sind begehbar, im Innern wird das alltägliche Leben aus der damaligen Zeit gezeigt.

In der Baugruppe Westerwald / Mittelrhein steht eine Scheune aus Langenscheid, in der eine historische Feuerspritze ausgestellt ist. Dabei handelt es sich um einen pferdegezogenen Wagen, auf dem ein hölzerner Wassertank montiert ist. Mit großen Griffen konnten die Feuerwehrleute wie bei einer Pumpe Druck aufbauen und so das Wasser durch einen angeschlossenen Schlauch pressen. Die hier ausgestellte Feuerspritze stammt aus dem Jahr 1855 aus der Gemeinde Medard in Rheinland-Pfalz.

Bitte beachtet, dass ein Besuch der Feuerspritze nur mit einem kostenpflichtigen Eintritt im Museum zu den Öffnungszeiten möglich ist. Aktuell (2022) beträgt der Eintritt für Erwachsene 9,50 Euro.

The LVR-Freilichtmuseum Kommern is one of the largest open-air museums in Europe and shows the history of the Rhineland on around 100 hectares. To do this, around 78 historic houses and buildings from various regions of the Rhineland were disassembled. They were then put together into small villages based on their geographic origin and rebuilt here. The oldest houses date from the 15th century, but most are from the Prussian period (18th to 19th centuries). Most of the buildings can be walked in, and everyday life from that time is shown inside.

In the Westerwald / Middle Rhine building group there is a barn from Langenscheid in which a historical fire engine is on display. It is a horse-drawn wagon on which a wooden water tank is mounted. With large handles, the firefighters were able to build up pressure like a pump and thus force the water through a connected hose. The fire engine on display here dates back to 1855 from the municipality of Medard in Rhineland-Palatinate.

Please note that a visit to the fire engine is only possible with a paid entry to the museum during opening hours. Currently (2022) the entrance fee for adults is 9.50 euros.
