This statue of the prophet Elias is located at Mount Calvary Cemetery on Highpoint Drive near Coal Center, Pennsylvania. The statue is near the main entrance to the cemetery, in a row of 19 statues of saints and Old Testament prophets. The statue depicts Elias holding two books, the "Life of Elias" and a second book with the words "St. John" and "true" visible, but the other words covered by the statue's hand.
Elias (also spelled Elijah) was a 9th century BC Hebrew prophet who was active in the northern kingdom of Israel during the time of King Ahab and King Ahaziah, as told in the books of Kings in the Bible. One story of Elias involves his prophecy of a drought caused by the pagan worship introduced by Jezebel. After a contest with the pagan prophets, it is determined that Elias' God is the true God and the pagans are slain. After further difficulties with Ahab and Jezebel, Elias prepares Elisha to succeed him, and Elias is taken up into heaven in a whirlwind.
