Living on Principale Street

Principale Street has been a major development axis since the beginnings of Aylmer. It is, in fact, in direct continuity with Aylmer Road which led to the Auberge Symmes wharf from Hull. It was this strategic boarding place that everything transited, passengers as goods.

The timber industry was initially the main economic engine of the municipality. The bosses, known as the timber barons, are Americans, Scottish, or Irish, but the workers are mostly French-speaking. They also live in Aylmer, which gives a mix of social classes and residences, from the most modest, which accommodate small traders, to the most luxurious. Principale Street still bears the traces of its first inhabitants. On the south side are concentrated more modest buildings which accommodate traders, while the large bourgeois houses are built more on the north side, with a view of the river. Today, the street remains a dynamic living space where residents and merchants live side by side.

Squared wooden houses for small traders:

Many houses on rue Principale have a frame made of squared logs, a reminder of the early days of Aylmer. These simple houses housed small traders who mostly had their shop on the ground floor and lived upstairs. Bakery, tinsmith, general store and tavern have notably opened their doors at addresses 58 to 64 of the street. Some owners of Old Aylmer have chosen to make the original frame of their house visible again. Such examples can be seen on Eardley Road and Parker Street.
