"In 1581 after more than two centuries of existence, the alderman acquired a vast Gothic residence. In addition to the municipal administration, the new town hall houses the court and soon the prisons of the royal justice, it is the fire of the latter which decides on a total reconstruction of the building from 1774.

Under the direction of Nicolas Durand, architect of the Generality of Champagne, the new Town Hall takes over and organizes the municipal, judicial and penitentiary functions of the old town hall. Thus the old royal prisons are rebuilt behind the building.

In the pediment, the acronym French Republic replaced the royal arms burnt down during the revolution."

"En 1581 après plus de deux siècles d'existence, l'échevinat acquiert une vaste demeure gothique. En plus de l'administration communale, la nouvelle maison de ville abrite le tribunal et bientôt les prisons de la justice royale, c'est l'incendie des ces dernières qui décide d'une reconstruction totale du bâtiment à partir de 1774.

Sous la conduite de Nicolas Durand architecte de la généralité de Champagne, le nouvel Hôtel de ville reprend et agence les fonctions municipales, judiciaires et pénitentiaires de l'ancienne maison de ville. Ainsi les anciennes prisons royales sont reconstruites derrière le bâtiment.

Dans le fronton le sigle république Française remplaça les armes royales bûchées à la révolution."
