"The building is a two-story, load bearing structure of stretcher bond coursing trimmed with pink granite. The center portion has a hip roof whereas the breezeways and wings are covered with a flat roof. The base of the building is trimmed with granite around the perimeter of the first floor level and the crawl area is of quarry-face stone.

Later additions and alterations to the school include the construction of a cafeteria in 1930, (masonry and concrete frame) enlargement of the library in 1966, relighting in 1971 and the installation of a master antenna system for educational T.V. in 1976.

James Butler Bonham Elementary School was built in 1889 to serve the old King Williams area of San Antonio (listed on the National Register, "King William Historic District, "1968). Originally this was the wealthiest residential area of the city and many prominent business and civic leaders attended Bonham. This school is one of the best and oldest examples of San Antonio's school buildings constructed in the Victorian style typical of the traditional King William area."
