This tree is part of the Chicago Tree Project, a project that commissions artists to turn dead and dying trees in city parks into art rather than removing them. This tree is called "Nestful." The artists Janet Austin and Emily Moorhead-Wallace covered a 100-year-old oak tree with 190 bird houses.
According to Block Club Chicago, "The artists researched the kinds of birds that stop by each year — chickadees, nuthatches, swallows, wrens, woodpeckers, warblers, flickers, starlings, sparrows, flycatchers, bluebirds and titmice — to create the birdhouses with the ideal dimensions for them to nest."
