The church was consecrated in 1843 and was called 'The Black Church' as it was built using blue-black bricks. In 1892 the original church was enlarged with the spire remaining as a memento of the Black Church.

A memorial in the churchyard honours Captain Norman Kingsley Street.

Dedication text:-
"NORMAN KINGSLEY STREET CAPT. WOR. REGT.GEN.HDQRS STAFF 39TH INF. BGDE. KILLED IN ACTION AT SARI BAIR GALLIPOLI. AUG 18 1915 AGED 33.
ONLY SON OF TR & MARIAN STREET."

A second face of the memorial also commemorates his parents Thomas Richard Street 1852-1915 ans Marian Street 1847-1921.
