Among the many, but often short-lived public office positions held by George H. W. Bush was U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. Appointed by President Richard M. Nixon in 1971, he served until he became Chairman of the Republican National Committee in early 1973. Of course, he eventually went on to become Director of the CIA, Vice President and then the 41st President of the United States.
At the George H.W. Bush Library & Museum in College Station Texas, there are various exhibits that chronicle the career of the former President. In one of these, dedicated to his time as UN Ambassador, there is a sit-by-me statue that is described on the museum’s website as “a fun photo op!” You can sit next to the former ambassador and discuss foreign policy, but don’t expect any profound insights as it is just a piece of metal.
