"C'est en 1621 que les jésuites sont appelés à Langres par l'évêque. Ils implantent leur collège au bord de la rue principale au milieu du 17e siècle dans un but de prières et d'études.

Il pouvait accueillir 200 jeunes notables de la région. L'ensemble est détruit par un incendie en 1746. La reconstruction commence aussitôt et se terminera en 1770. Mais les Jésuites, chassés de France en 1762, n'en verront pas l'achèvement.

Le bâtiment est en forme de "U" et s'appuie sur l'ancien rempart sud du 13e siècle. Les extrémités du U, retours du bâtiment, sont reliés par un mur de clôture qui borde la place. Au centre du mur, le portail est orné d'une allégorie de l'instruction due au sculpteur langrois Antoine Besançon.

L'extrémité gauche est percée d'une porte et d'une grande baie cintrée sommée d'un fronton en arc de cercle. L'ornementation est assez sobre.

A droite, l'extrémité correspond à la chapelle. La façade est conçue comme un retable de pierre, de style baroque. La porte, comme la grande baie au-dessus, est en plein cintre. De part et d'autre, des pilastres et 2 niches abritant des statues en bois fortement dégradées. Le fronton est richement décoré de nuées et de rayons où apparaissent des têtes d'angelots. Le tout couronné de pots à feux.

Cet endroit est aujourd'hui le collège Diderot. Rappelons que Denis Diderot, (1713-1784) écrivain, philosophe et encyclopédiste français des Lumières, est natif de cette ville, et qu'il fit ses premières études dans l'ancien collège."

"It was in 1621 that the Jesuits were called to Langres by the bishop. They set up their college on the edge of the main street in the middle of the 17th century for the purpose of prayers and studies.

It could accommodate 200 notable young people from the region. The whole was destroyed by fire in 1746. Reconstruction began immediately and ended in 1770. But the Jesuits, driven out of France in 1762, did not see its completion.

The building is in the shape of a "U" and rests on the old southern rampart of the 13th century. The ends of the U, returns to the building, are connected by a fence wall that borders the square. In the center of the wall, the portal is decorated with an allegory of education by the Langres sculptor Antoine Besançon.

The left end is pierced with a door and a large arched bay topped with a pediment in an arc of a circle. The ornamentation is quite sober.

On the right, the end corresponds to the chapel. The facade is designed as a stone altarpiece, in the Baroque style. The door, like the large bay above, is semicircular. On both sides, pilasters and 2 niches sheltering heavily degraded wooden statues. The pediment is richly decorated with clouds and rays where the heads of cherubs appear. All crowned with fire pots.

This place is now the Diderot College. Remember that Denis Diderot, (1713-1784) French writer, philosopher and encyclopaedist of the Enlightenment, was born in this city, and that he did his first studies in the old college."
