Roger A. Peterson was born in Alta, Iowa. He earned his pilot's license in October 1955. He gained his commercial license in 1958. He was not yet certified for instrument flying or nighttime flying when he was contacted by the manager of the Surf Ballroom. Nevertheless, he agreed to fly the three stars on a stormy evening flight to their next show in Fargo, North Dakota. The flight ended in this corn field on the night of February 2, 1959.
