In 1903 Andrew Carnegie gave $50,000 to Mount Holyoke College for the construction of the Williston Limemorial Library. The library was named for businessman college trustee Asahel Lyman Williston. The Gothic revival style library was designed by George F. Newton and built of sandstone in 1904. The original Carnegie building faces west towards College Street. Additions were made in 1935, 1968 and 1990. Today the main entrance is on the campus side at the base of a Gothic tower.
