These toadstool formations were created when a harder layer of sediment, approaching limestone, was deposited over a layer of softer sandstone. Time, wind and water resulted in the under lying layer being eroded away except for sections protected by the harder cap. These are unique as the area they are in is noted as a flat rolling grassland. The softness of the under layer can be demonstrated by the depth of which visitor's initials have been carved. Sadly.
