La ville a repris les armes des Colonna en remplaçant les chiens soutenant la colonne (armes parlantes) par des lions.
En 1575, le Sénat de Gênes a concédé à la cité d'Ajaccio des armoiries «d'azur» à la colonne d'argent surmontée des armes de Gênes, accostée de deux lévriers blancs" avec la légende circulaire: "ainsi les Ajacciens envers la république de Gênes".
Dans la première moitié du XVIIIe siècle, ces armoiries furent modifiées en signe d'indépendance à l'égard de Gênes.

In 1575, the Senate of Genoa granted the city of Ajaccio a coat of arms "of azure" with a silver column surmounted by the arms of Genoa, between two white greyhounds" with the circular legend: "thus the Ajaccians towards the Republic of Genoa".
In the first half of the 18th century, this coat of arms was modified as a sign of independence from Genoa.
Ajaccio's town hall was built under the reign of Charles X between 1824 and 1830. It houses a Napoleonic lounge where various paintings, statues and souvenirs concerning the epic and the imperial family are kept.

Paul Leonetti, chef de file de Corsica Libera à Ajaccio, veut relancer le débat sur les finances de la ville. Après son intervention au Conseil municipal du 27 mars dernier, il publie un document détaillé où il parle de « menace sur la ville » et dénonce un niveau d'embauche « pléthorique ».
« La ville a embauché 200 personnes de plus que l’effectif que la municipalité comptait à la prise de pouvoir de Laurent Marcangeli. Je dis qu’entre temps, il y a eu 100 départs à la retraite. 200 plus 100 pour moi, ça fait 300 personnes à embaucher pour la ville. Et c’est ce qui pèse très lourdement depuis le début et qui grève définitivement les finances de la ville désormais menacées », estime le conseiller municipal Corsica Libera à la maire d’Ajaccio.
Dans son analyse, Paul Leonetti compare des comptes administratifs, vraiment réalisés, avec les budgets primitifs qui sont, eux, juste prévisionnels. Difficile de s'y retrouver donc.
Année périlleuse
D'autant qu'il intègre l'année 2014, année périlleuse à Ajaccio. Les élections avaient été annulées et le conflit sur les embauches faisait déjà la une.
En tout cas, la mairie récuse actuellement les chiffres de l'opposition. « Entre les entrées et les sorties, en net, on est environ à une cinquantaine de postes. Il faut bien distinguer les emplois titulaires des emplois contractuels. Ce qui compte, ce sont les emplois budgétés et qui restent dans les effectifs », souligne Stéphane Sbraggia, premier adjoint en charge des Finances à la mairie d’Ajaccio.
Alors l'emploi municipal a-t-il augmenté de 300, 200 ou 50 ? Il est impossible aux citoyens comme aux journalistes d'y voir clair rapidement, car sur le site de la ville la mise en ligne des documents financiers est plus que partielle. Elle est pourtant obligatoire.

So has municipal employment increased by 300, 200 or 50? It is impossible for citizens and journalists alike to see this quickly, as the financial documents on the city's website are only partially available. It is, however, mandatory.
