The rectangular bronze plaque commemorating the service of the locals of the Yea District who fought in the Vietnam War is mounted to the front of the second granite step of the memorial obelisk. The plaque reads:

Presented to
Murrindindi Shire Council
By the
Victorian Vietnam Veterans Community
in Commemoration of the
40th Anniversary of the
Battle of Long Tan - 18th August 2006

The Battle of Long Tan took place 18 August 1966, and while the Australian SIGINT had detected Viet Cong's approach north of Long Tan, it required Allied soldiers and artillery to respond to the early morning mortar attack. The tracking of the North Vietnamese infantry left the Allies vulnerable to flank attacks, and heavy casualties were taken. It was a complicated and very messy battle; but it would seem that there no fatalities from the Yea district. [Wiki: Long Tan]
