Fleeing famine, William J. Gilbane (1842 - 1927) emigrated with his parents from Ireland in 1845 to Providence, Rhode Island. There, along with his brother, he founded a family carpentry business in 1873. After 6 generations, it has expanded to a worldwide construction and facility management company, Gilbane, Inc. With more than 50 offices across the United States and around the globe, it is one of the largest family-owned businesses in the US. To honor William Gilbane a plaque is included at the Rhode Island Irish Famine Memorial along the Providence River. It is mounted to a low boulder at the north end of the commemorative wall and reads:
In remembrance of the strength, courage and determination of William Gilbane -- who created opportunity and a lasting legacy of integrity through living his core values -- may his spirit never be forgotten.

Born in 1842 in County Leitrim, he crossed the Atlantic in 1845, settling in Providence. He founded Wm Gilbane Contractor and Builder in 1873, Wm Gilbane and Brother Contractor in 1883 and the Gilbane Building Company in 1908. From those humble roots, his company has grown to include Gilbane Development Co. (1980) and Gilbane Inc. (2000) and is helping shape the skyline of Providence and cities across this great nation.

Notable local projects in Providence include Butler Hospital, the Roger Williams Park Casino and Museum, and many structures at Brown University. Notable national work includes:

  • 1964 - New York World's Fair - The New England Pavilion in Flushing Meadows, NY
  • 1980 - Lake Placid Winter Olympics Facilities in Lake Placid, NY
  • 1982 - Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C.
  • 1987 - George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, TX
  • 1993 - O'Hare International Airport, Terminal 5 in Chicago, IL
