Das LVR-Freilichtmuseum Kommern ist eines der größten Freilichtmuseen Europas und zeigt auf etwa 100 Hektar die Geschichte des Rheinlands. Dazu wurden rund 78 historische Häuser und Gebäude aus verschiedenen Regionen des Rheinlands abgetragen. Anschließend wurden sie anhand ihrer geographischen Herkunft zu Baugruppen zusammengestellt und hier wiederaufgebaut. Die ältesten Häuser stammen aus dem 15. Jahrhundert, die meisten sind aber aus der Preußenzeit (18. bis 19. Jahrhundert). Die meisten Gebäude sind begehbar, im Innern wird das alltägliche Leben aus der damaligen Zeit gezeigt.

Unter den neueren Gebäuden sind zwei Nissenhütten aus Krefeld-Bockum und dem Ruhrgebiet. Diese einfachen Behausungen wurden während des Zweiten Weltkriegs in großer Zahl gebaut und prägten auch noch in der Nachkriegszeit das Stadtbild vieler Städte im Rheinland. Sie wurden zunächst militärisch und später immer mehr als Notunterkünfte für Familien genutzt, die ihre Häuser im Krieg verloren haben.

Beide hier ausgestellten Nissenhütten sind begehbar. In der einen wird eine Ausstellung zum Thema Flucht und Vertreibung während des Zweiten Weltkriegs gezeigt. In der zweiten Nissenhütte werden die Lebensverhältnisse in der Nachkriegszeit in einer solchen improvisierten Unterkunft gezeigt.

Bitte beachtet, dass ein Besuch der Nissenhütten nur mit einem kostenpflichtigen Eintritt im Museum zu den Öffnungszeiten möglich ist. Aktuell (2022) beträgt der Eintritt für Erwachsene 9,50 Euro.

The LVR-Freilichtmuseum Kommern is one of the largest open-air museums in Europe and shows the history of the Rhineland on around 100 hectares. To do this, around 78 historic houses and buildings from various regions of the Rhineland were disassembled. They were then put together into small villages based on their geographic origin and rebuilt here. The oldest houses date from the 15th century, but most are from the Prussian period (18th to 19th centuries). Most of the buildings can be walked in, and everyday life from that time is shown inside.

Among the newer buildings are two Nissen huts from Krefeld-Bockum and the Ruhr area. These simple dwellings were built in large numbers during the Second World War and continued to characterize the cityscape of many cities in the Rhineland after the war. They were first used by the military and later increasingly as emergency shelters for families who lost their homes in the war.

Both Nissen huts exhibited here are accessible. One is showing an exhibition on the subject of flight and expulsion during the Second World War. In the second Nissen hut, the living conditions in the post-war period in such an improvised accommodation are shown.

Please note that a visit to the Nissen huts is only possible with a paid entry to the museum during opening hours. Currently (2022) the entrance fee for adults is 9.50 euros.
