Utrecht is een van de oudste steden van Nederland. Het is ontstaan als een Romeinse fortificatie aan de Limes. In de zevende eeuw werd op de plaats waar dit fort zich bevond een kerkje gebouwd en in de eeuwen erna verrezen hier grotere kerken. Van daaruit werden grote delen van het huidige Nederland gekerstend. In 1122 kreeg Utrecht als een van de eerste steden in het huidige Nederland stadsrechten. Dankzij zijn ligging aan de rivier de Rijn groeide Utrecht in de 13e en 14e eeuw uit tot een van de belangrijkste handelssteden van Europa. Met de opkomst van het graafschap Holland verplaatste deze handel zich daarheen en werd Utrecht minder belangrijk, hoewel Utrecht tot in het begin van de 16e eeuw de grootste stad van Nederland bleef. In het jaar 1808 was Utrecht kortstondig de hoofdstad van het Koninkrijk Holland. Ten tijde van de industriële revolutie was Utrecht het centrum van de nationale staal- en spoorwegindustrie.

Het feit dat er in Zuid-Afrika een plaats is die Utrecht heet, heeft natuurlijk alles te maken met het koloniale verleden. Over die tijd bestaan veel heldenverhalen, maar in werkelijkheid gingen koloniale veroveringen vaak gepaard met veel ellende. De totstandkoming van Utrecht is in retrospect ook niet iets waar we als Nederlanders nou heel trots op moeten zijn: in 1852 ruilden drie Nederlandse kolonisten honderd stuks vee voor ‘graasrechten’ met Zoeloekoning Mpande. De kolonisten claimden het land vervolgens voor zichzelf en stichtten er de Republiek Utrecht, vernoemd naar de stad die we nu als Domstad kennen.
Je vindt het Zuid-Afrikaanse Utrecht aan de voet van de Balele Mountains in de provincie KwaZoeloe-Natal. Er wonen ruim 5000 mensen. Op dit moment is het er qua weer trouwens beter toeven dan in de Domstad. Het is er rond deze tijd van het jaar ongeveer 30 graden.

Thanks to its location on the river Rhine, in the 13th and 14th centuries Utrecht grew to become one of the most important trading cities in Europe. With the rise of the county of Holland, this trade moved there and Utrecht became less important, although Utrecht remained the largest city of the Netherlands until the beginning of the 16th century. In 1808, Utrecht was briefly the capital of the Kingdom of Holland. At the time of the Industrial Revolution, Utrecht was the centre of the national steel and railway industry.

The fact that there is a place called Utrecht in South Africa is of course related to its colonial past. There are many heroic stories about that time, but in reality colonial conquests were often accompanied by a lot of misery. In retrospect, the creation of Utrecht is not something we as the Dutch should be very proud of: in 1852, three Dutch colonists exchanged one hundred cattle for 'grazing rights' with Zulu King Mpande. The colonists then claimed the land for themselves and founded the Republic of Utrecht, named after the city we now know as Domstad.
You will find South African Utrecht at the foot of the Balele Mountains in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. More than 5000 people live there. At the moment, the weather is better than in the Domstad. It is about 30 degrees at this time of year.
