"On this panel is represented the portion of the "Via Francigena" which goes from Wissant to Guines, passing through Saint-Inglevert, Hauteville, Landrethun-le-Nord, and Caffiers, i.e. a hike of about 26.7 km for 7 hours of walking .

The Via Francigena, the Francigene way in French, (which can be translated as the “way that comes from France”) is a pilgrimage route linking Canterbury to Rome, passing through France and Switzerland. It would be too restrictive to identify it with the only itinerary of Sigéric, Archbishop of Canterbury, who made the trip in 990 and left the description in a document which recapitulates its 79 stages, during the return trip from the “Eternal City” to 'at the seat of his bishopric. However, it is the stages of his journey that form the Via Francigena today.

Like the Camino de Compostela, it is an important medieval pilgrimage route which has recently been the subject of studies, marking and recognition in 1994 by the Council of Europe as "great cultural route of the Council of Europe ”.

The Via Francigena includes, in reverse, the Italian Way of St. James (to reach the Via Tolosana or the Via Gebennensis). Il serait trop restrictif de l’identifier au seul itinéraire de Sigéric, archevêque de Cantorbéry, qui effectua le trajet en 990 et en laissa la description dans un document qui récapitule ses 79 étapes, lors du voyage de retour depuis la « ville éternelle » jusqu’au siège de son évêché. Toutefois, ce sont les étapes de son voyage qui forment la Via Francigena d'aujourd'hui.

À l'instar du chemin de Compostelle, c'est une importante voie de pèlerinage médiévale qui a été récemment l'objet d'études, d'un balisage et d'une reconnaissance en 1994 par le Conseil de l'Europe comme « grand itinéraire culturel du Conseil de l'Europe ».

La via Francigena inclut notamment, à rebours, le chemin de Saint-Jacques des Italiens (permettant d'atteindre la via Tolosana ou la via Gebennensis). Prolongée au-delà de Rome, la via Francigena du Sud permet d'atteindre le sanctuaire de Monte Gargano à Monte Sant'Angelo (par la via Micaelica) et les ports d'embarquement apuliens vers la Terre sainte.
