The ruined church of St Karin or St Catherine is located in the town of Visby on Gotland. The church was built together with a monastery between 1233 and 1250 by the branch of the Franciscan order founded in 1210.
Around 1300 the single-nave nave was expanded and converted into a three-nave hall building. At the end of the 14th century, further construction work was carried out on the choir, which, together with the vault construction, led to the collapse of these vaults in 1400. The bricks used to save the vaulting kept the church strong into the 16th century, but when Visby was conquered by the Lübeck Hanseatic League in 1525, the church was left to decay.
Today, in addition to the outer walls, the pillars and the vaulted arches are still standing, the roof and the vaults themselves have disappeared. Visiting the church ruins is free.
