Mariukirkjan (St Mary's Church) in Tórshavn is the only Catholic church on the Faroe Islands and the Franciscan sisters are the only order.
There are about 150 Catholics from over 23 nations living on the Faroe Islands.
St. Mary's Church was consecrated in 1987. It replaced the previous St. Mary's Church. Árni Winter, Tórshavn, is the architect of the church and he has also designed the furniture.
In the garden around the church, all kinds of herbs grow from the southern hemisphere. It should symbolize that Mariukirkjan belongs to the international Catholic community.
The Roman Catholic faith came to the Faroe Islands in the year 999 where the Norwegian king Olav Trygvason ordered the Faroese chief Sigmundur Brestisson to introduce Christianity. The doctrine of the Church was Roman Catholic. In the year 1100, the Faroe Islands were organized as a diocese.
