"Medieval rampart built in the 13th century - 15th century. They have an elliptical shape with a length of 600 m and have five gates. All along the ramparts, buildings have been built. The crenellations and constructive elements of the ramparts are still visible on several facades.
The medieval city of Vence is surrounded by a roughly rectangular enclosure with very rounded corners, surrounding an area of ??200 m by 150 m. Within this enclosure are two important buildings. On the one hand the cathedral of Vence, in the center of the city and on the other hand the castle of Villeneuve, near the door of Peyra.
To the south, the facades of the houses that form the limit of the medieval city only reveal large portions of the facing of the enclosure. On the north side, however, the facing is visible in its entirety and remarkably well preserved.
The enclosure has five doors: the door of Signadour or door of Saint-Paul; the Levis portal; the door of Peyra; the Porte d'Orient or Porte de Cagnes or Portal du Siege which dates from 1787; the Porte du Faubourg or Porte Pontis which dates from 1863.
On October 23, 1333, the national masters of the Court of Aix authorized the inhabitants to open windows on the ramparts, provided that they were grilled with iron.
The enclosure is surrounded by streets which must be at the site of an old moat, at least on the south side. The walls have openings opposite the windows of the houses which have leaned against them. You can still see in some parts of the enclosure its crenellated crowning. The best preserved part is along Boulevard Paul-André."
