The church dates from the year 1175. In that year the St. Nicholas Chapel, as it was then called, was consecrated by the bishop of Utrecht as a parochial church. Chaplain Jan de Vries was appointed as the first pastor. The architect of this parish church is unknown. After the consecration, the St. Nicholas Chapel was elevated to the parish church of the lordship of Merwede.
Around the year 1420 the church underwent a major expansion and became a so-called hall church. In 1567/68 a fire largely destroyed the church. The remaining part was rebuilt into a simple double-choir church, half smaller than before the fire. In the rebuilding, old stones were partly used, which were first chipped. New Leiden stones were also used, originating from the brick factories along the Oude Rijn. In 1592 the almshouse could be used again.
