Saint Mary of Czestochowa Polish National Catholic Cemetery is located on Merline Avenue in Erie, Pennsylvania. The small cemetery is in the middle of a residential neighborhood and from the 1970s until 2001 there were no signs or grave markers indicating that it even was a cemetery. The cemetery was founded sometime in the 19-teens by a local Polish National Church. The church closed in 1939 and the cemetery was neglected for about 30 years. Unhappy with the state of the cemetery, the local mayor had the site leveled, with all of the headstones being discarded, in 1972. A local man worked with a genealogist to identify many of the individuals who are buried there, and in 2001 a monument was dedicated at the cemetery listing those who were identified. One additional gravestone is at the location for Stella and Genevive Mandarin.
