L’archéologie nous enseigne que la muraille encore visible repose sur des fondations grecques réutilisées ensuite par les Romains. Tout au long du Moyen âge les murs antiques sont entretenus jusqu’à leur renforcement par les Grimaldi, seigneur de la ville, dans les années 1590.

La porte de l’Orme, comme l’enceinte qu’elle perce, sert alors de première ligne de défense au château seigneurial. 1608 marque l’entrée d’Antibes dans le domaine royal par le rachat de la seigneurie par Henri IV. C’est aussi le début de la réalisation de la grande enceinte bastionnée. Dès lors, le mur antique perd sa vocation militaire pour être remployé en habitations.

C’est de cette histoire pluriséculaire que sont issues les demeures pittoresques qui occupent la Porte de l’Orme sur cette vue du début du XXe siècle. On y voit l’enseigne d’une couturière sur une des fenêtres , mais le plus surprenant est l’aménagement décoratif de la porte. A ce moment-là, le regard s’intéresse aux habitations, la tour de gauche décorée à la manière d’une villa avec sa terrasse et son balcon à balustres et la tour de droite plus modeste.

La rupture franche dans le traitement décoratif au milieu de la porte urbaine pointe une histoire du regard : vers 1900, on ne voyait plus que la scansion des habitations ou, plus justement, des propriétés, sans accorder d’attention à l’espace public que représente la porte. Depuis, le regard s’est déplacé : l’intérêt pour le patrimoine au cours du XXe siècle a redonné sa lisibilité à la porte, objet désormais de toutes nos attentions. "

It is from this centuries-old history that the picturesque residences that occupy the Porte de l'Orme in this view from the beginning of the 20th century come. We see the sign of a seamstress on one of the windows, but the most surprising is the decorative arrangement of the door. At this time, the gaze is interested in the dwellings, the left tower decorated in the style of a villa with its terrace and balustraded balcony and the more modest right tower.

The clear break in the decorative treatment in the middle of the urban door points to a history of the gaze: around 1900, we only saw the scansion of the dwellings or, more precisely, of the properties, without paying attention to the public space that represents the door. Since then, the gaze has moved: the interest in heritage during the 20th century has given back its legibility to the door, now the object of all our attention."
