The pastor from Winden is said to have gotten into serious trouble on his way to Welschneudorf.
According to two different versions, this was caused either by an attack by robbers or by a very strong storm. When the pastor saw no way out of his situation, he asked for heavenly help and rescue from the greatest need. At that moment he made a promise to God that if he were saved he would put a crucifix on said oak tree. The cast-iron crucifix, which the pastor then actually attached as a thank you, was originally 70 cm tall and has now completely grown into the oak except for a few centimeters.

The Kreuzeiche between Winden and Welschneudorf is the destination of the cross-sign tour in Nassau.

In alten Zeiten soll der Pfarrer von Winden auf seinem Weg nach Welschneudorf in arge Bedrängnis geraten sein. (In manchen Erzählungen ist von Räubern die Rede, in anderen wiederum von einem Unwetter.) In einem Stoßgebet bat er um Gottes Hilfe und entging der Gefahr. Zum Dank für den himmlischen Beistand brachte er ein Kruzifix an der Eiche an, an der er sein Gebet sprach. Das 70 cm große gusseiserne Kruzifix ist mittlerweile bis auf wenige Zentimeter komplett in den mächtigen Baum eingewachsen.

Die Kreuzeiche zwischen Winden und Welschneudorf und ist Ziel der Kreuzeichen-Tour im Nassauer Land.
