Silhouettes of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and several other brightly colored people populate a micro park at the intersection of Mason and South Main Streets in Woonsocket, Rhode Island. The project was a collaboration of the local MLK Day Planning Committee and RiverzEdge Arts. The seven sculptures are life-sized and made from one-inch-thick steel, each painted a different color. A steel sign at the upper part of the property reads:
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a great man
whose life ended too soon. His powerful
message of equality, dignity, respect and
community did not end with his passing, but
lives on eternally, locally, and globally. The
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Island
celebrates this legacy in the Woonsocket
community. Our diverse city is a lens by
which to see Dr. King's message and
legacy. This memorial is a reminder that our
community is strong, diverse and powerful
when we all work together. This is the
cultural and social fabric that continues to
make Woonsocket a great community!
This memorial site was dedicated
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Square
on January 16, 2012 by the city of
Woonsocket.
