NL Het boek speelt in de late 19e eeuw in Parijs en in het fictieve kasteel Uylenburgh in Nederland. Het verteld het levensverhaal van Amelie , een zelfstandige vrouw uit de bourgeoisie van Parijs.Ze probeert te ontsnappen uit de greep van haar strenge familie te ontsnappen, vooral van haar moeder. Dan ontmoet ze Jerome, een Nederlandse baron en ze wordt verliefd. Het lukt haar met hem te trouwen, maar is ze dan in een andere gevangenis terecht gekomen?

De kracht van Amelie is geschreven door Marlies Kruijer, mijn moeder. Ze werkt als zalengids in Kasteel de Haar. Het bevlogen leven van de vroegere bewoners van het kasteel, met name Helen de Rothschild een voor die tijd erg zelfstandige vrouw, en de familie van Zuilen van Nijevelt, inspireerde haar tot het schrijven van dit boek. Het is haar debuutroman. Het kasteel Uylenburgh in het boek is gecreeerd naar het voorbeeld van Kasteel de Haar. Dit werd in de late 19e eeuw als ‘sprookjeskasteel’ door de familie van Zuilen van Nijevelt gebouwd en is één van de bekendste kastelen van Nederland.

ENG The book is set in the late 19th century in Paris and in the fictional castle Uylenburgh in the Netherlands. It tells the life story of Amelie , an independent woman from the bourgeoisie of Paris. She tries to escape from the clutches of her strict family, especially from her mother. Then she meets Jerome, a Dutch baron and she falls in love. She manages to marry him, but will she end up in another prison?

The power of Amelie is written by Marlies Kruijer, my mother. She works as a tour guide in Kasteel de Haar. The inspired life of the former inhabitants of the castle, especially Helen de Rothschild, a woman who was very independent at the time, and the family van Zuilen van Nijevelt, inspired her to write this book. It is her debut novel. The castle Uylenburgh in the book was created after the example of Castle de Haar. This was built in the late 19th century as a 'fairytale castle' by the van Zuilen van Nijevelt family and is one of the most famous castles in the Netherlands.
