Mikkjal Dánjalsson á Ryggi (1879-1956) was a Faroese teacher, politician and poet. He is especially known for stories about the local community and his many hymns.
Mikkjal Dánjalsson á Ryggi was a Christian and therefore many of his texts are about God. In the hymn book Sálmabók Føroya folk, Mikkjal has composed 75 poems and translated 40, which makes up over a quarter of the collection's 431 hymns.
As a politician, he was an advocate of having Faroese as a school language instead of Danish. However, this required textbooks in Faroese and he therefore wrote several textbooks himself, including about birds.
The sculpture, which was made by the Faroese artist Hans Pauli Olsen in 2011, shows Mikkjal Dánjalsson á Ryggi with his pencil in his hand and placed in front of an open book with engraved texts and birds.
