Built in 1908 and opened in 1912 to show silent movies, it was a couple more decades before 'talking pictures' became 'the rage'. It was sold to Hoyts Cinema in 1926, and later in 1969 it was showing predominantly Greek movies (consistent with the local population). In 1991 it was purchased with the aim of providing a live entertainment venue, and "is the longest running live theatre in Sydney, hosting concerts, comedians, plays and all forms of performance." The Theatre can seat 1700, or if the seats are removed - like for the concert I attended - 2,500 people standing.
