Y a-t-il parmi vous des descendants de poilus ? Si vous habitez à Calvi, vous risquez sans doute d'entendre cette phrase, au café du coin ou à la boulangerie. L'historien et généalogiste Grégory Viguié a débarqué en Corse samedi 26 septembre, et y restera jusqu'au 30.
Tombé sous le charme de Calvi lors de ses multiples villégiatures, Grégory Viguié a été mandaté il y a un an par le maire, Ange Santini, pour réaliser un livre sur les poilus inscrits sur le monument aux morts de la commune.
Un livre pour rendre hommage aux poilus calvais
Le Gardois Grégory Viguié travaille depuis déjà un an sur ce projet. En octobre 2019, il a commencé à se plonger dans les archives municipales de Calvi, avant de poursuivre ses recherches sur le continent, notamment au Service historique de la Défense ainsi qu'aux Archives nationales.
Son travail consiste à réaliser la biographie des 111 poilus inscrits sur le monument aux morts de Calvi. Deux autres parties du livre seront consacrées à la solidarité municipale pendant la guerre, ainsi qu'aux statistiques sur l'ensemble des poilus.
Le projet est avant tout motivé par un devoir de mémoire : "rendre hommage à ces soldats afin que leurs noms ne tombent pas dans l'oubli".
"Plus le temps passe, plus la mémoire se délite, regrette ce passionné de généalogie. Qui a déjà vu un monument aux morts à la gloire des Grognards de Napoléon ?"
"Un jour ou l’autre, on finira peut-être par détruire les monuments aux morts de la Grande Guerre 1914-1918. C'est donc important de travailler sur ce devoir de mémoire pour que les poilus, leur mémoire, puissent perdurer dans le temps".
Retrouver des descendants et partager des souvenirs
Ces prochains jours, en plus des recherches aux archives municipales de Calvi, Grégory Viguié souhaite se rendre au cimetière, chercher les tombes des poilus afin d'y trouver des photos pour son livre.
Il compte également faire le tour des villages aux alentours pour compléter ses recherches. Plusieurs soldats inscrits sur le monument aux morts de Calvi n'étaient pas natifs de la commune, mais de Lumio, Calenzana ou encore L'Île Rousse.
Enfin, le plus gros du travail pour l'historien, "le plus long, le plus difficile, mais le plus intéressant", consiste à trouver des descendants des poilus. "Je cherche des photos, des documents, n'importe quel souvenir qui pourrait illustrer les biographies du livre", explique-t-il.
Il se balade ainsi dans la ville et ouvre le dialogue avec ses habitants. "Parfois, ils ne savent même pas qu'ils ont un grand-père ou arrière-grand-père inscrit sur le monument aux morts", explique l'historien qui a déjà travaillé sur un projet similaire à Nîmes.
Grégory Viguié ne garde pas les souvenirs des Calvais. Il les prend simplement en photo et profite d'un moment privilégié avec les familles pour échanger.
"Ça crée une émulation au sein des familles. Rechercher avec les enfants et les petits-enfants, ça leur permet aussi de redécouvrir l’histoire familiale, de redécouvrir des souvenirs qu’ils avaient un petit peu oubliés", confie l'historien.
"C’est ça la partie la plus intéressante parce qu’on rentre dans l’histoire des familles, on travaille avec eux, poursuit-il. Ils sont heureux parce qu’ils auront dans le livre, le grand-père ou l’arrière-grand-père qui sera mis à l’honneur".
Grégory Viguié n'exclut aucun soldat de la Grande Guerre. Blessés ou malades et morts plus tard, certains poilus calvais ne figurent pas sur le monument aux morts.
Grâce à ses investigations et à ses rencontres, il est fort possible que leurs noms soient rajoutés lors de la présentation du livre achevé.
"Je me donne encore deux ans"
Grégory Viguié compte sur le bouche-à-oreille pour retrouver le maximum de descendants de poilus. "Ici, tout le monde se connaît, c’est génial. Ça aide énormément".
Malgré tout, cela va prendre du temps. "Je me donne encore deux ans pour sortir le livre", estime-t-il. L'historien prévoit déjà plusieurs allers-retours entre Calvi et le continent pour pouvoir terminer ses recherches.
Après dix livres publiés, dont "Les poilus nîmois, l’accent du sacrifice", son travail sur les poilus de Calvi paraîtra aux éditions La Fenestrelle. L'occasion peut-être de rencontrer des classes de CM1-CM2 pour travailler sur ce devoir de mémoire à Calvi.
Et si d'autres communes de Corse sont intéressées par un tel projet, Gréogry Viguié est partant, "avec grand plaisir".

Having fallen under the spell of Calvi during his many vacations, Grégory Viguié was commissioned a year ago by the mayor, Ange Santini, to write a book about the poilus inscribed on the town's war memorial.
A book to pay homage to the Calvais poilus
Grégory Viguié from Gard has already been working for a year on this project. In October 2019, he began to immerse himself in the municipal archives of Calvi, before continuing his research on the continent, including the Historical Service of Defense as well as the National Archives.
His work consists of producing the biography of the 111 poilus inscribed on the Calvi war memorial. Two other parts of the book will be devoted to municipal solidarity during the war, as well as to statistics on all the poilus.
The project is above all motivated by a duty of memory: "to pay tribute to these soldiers so that their names do not fall into oblivion".
"The more time passes, the more the memory decays, regrets this passionate of genealogy. Who has ever seen a war memorial to the glory of Napoleon's Grognards?"
"One day or another, we may end up destroying the monuments to the dead of the Great War 1914-1918. It is therefore important to work on this duty of memory so that the poilus, their memory, can endure in time."
Finding descendants and sharing memories
Over the next few days, in addition to researching at the Calvi municipal archives, Gregory Viguié wants to go to the cemetery to look for the graves of the poilus in order to find photos for his book.
He also intends to visit the surrounding villages to complete his research. Several soldiers inscribed on the Calvi war memorial were not born in Calvi, but in Lumio, Calenzana or Île Rousse.
Finally, the biggest work for the historian, "the longest, the most difficult, but the most interesting", consists in finding the descendants of the poilus. "I am looking for photos, documents, any memory that could illustrate the biographies of the book," he explains.
So he walks around the city and opens a dialogue with its inhabitants. "Sometimes they don't even know that they have a grandfather or great-grandfather listed on the war memorial," explains the historian who has already worked on a similar project in Nîmes.
Grégory Viguié does not keep the memories of the Calvais. He simply takes pictures of them and takes advantage of a special moment with the families to exchange.
"It creates an emulation within the families. Researching with the children and grandchildren also allows them to rediscover their family history, to rediscover memories that they had forgotten," says the historian.
That's the most interesting part because we get into the history of the families, we work with them," he continues. They are happy because they will have in the book, the grandfather or the great-grandfather who will be honored".
Gregory Viguié does not exclude any soldier of the Great War. Wounded or sick and died later, some Calvados soldiers do not appear on the war memorial.
Thanks to his investigations and his meetings, it is quite possible that their names will be added during the presentation of the finished book.
"I give myself two more years".
Grégory Viguié is counting on word-of-mouth to find as many descendants of poilus as possible. "Here, everyone knows each other, it's great. It helps a lot".
Despite everything, it will take time. "I give myself another two years to get the book out," he says. The historian is already planning several return trips between Calvi and the mainland to complete his research.
After ten published books, including "Les poilus nîmois, l'accent du sacrifice", his work on the Calvi poilus will be published by La Fenestrelle. This may be an opportunity to meet classes of CM1-CM2 to work on this duty of memory in Calvi.
And if other communes of Corsica are interested in such a project, Gréogry Viguié is willing to do it, "with great pleasure".
