The Reeuwijkse Plassen area consists of ten lakes that are separated from each other by narrow dykes (with or without buildings). There are valuable grasslands around the lakes, where management is partly geared to meadow birds. In other parts (sparse grasslands) the emphasis is on botanical values. The Broekveld and Vettenbroek ponds are used by large numbers of waterfowl as a resting and feeding area. During periods of frost, this lake remains open longer than the other lakes due to its greater depth. Thousands of water birds (including beech swan, wigeon, gadwall and shoveler) from far and wide visit these lakes.
