"Le bâtiment se présente dans un tissu urbain imbriqué avec deux façades principales : l’une au sud, sur un bord de mer nommé quai des États-Unis, jadis occupé par les remparts et des baraques de pêcheurs, l’autre au nord, avec l’entrée de l'édifice donnant sur la rue Saint-François-de-Paule.
Historique:
La Marquise Alli-Maccarani obtient d'Amédée III, Roi de Sardaigne sous la juridiction duquel vit le Comté de Nice, l'autorisation de transformer son ancienne maison d'habitation en théâtre.
Aménagé en 1776, tout en bois, sa façade nord s'ouvre sur la ville et sa façade sud sur les remparts du quai du Midi, aujourd'hui quai des États-Unis.
En 1826, la Ville de Nice rachète le Théâtre sur les conseils du Roi Charles Félix et décide de le raser pour construire un grand Opéra dans le style italien, sur l'emplacement de l'ancien.
C'est Brunati, architecte de la Ville et Perotti, architecte turinois, qui conçoivent un édifice avec un parterre spacieux, sans sièges, comme il est encore de tradition à cette époque, avec quatre étages de loges pour installer confortablement le public aisé et la grande loge royale soutenue par deux cariatides dorées.
Le mercredi 23 mars 1881, pendant l'ouverture de Lucia de Lammermoor, tout bascule dans l'horreur, en quelques minutes. Un terrible incendie, dû vraisemblablement à une fuite de gaz au niveau de la rampe de scène, détruit entièrement le théâtre.
Le 7 novembre 1882, la municipalité décide de reconstruire le nouveau théâtre sur l'emplacement de l'ancien et charge François Aune des plans de l'édifice.
François Aune, né en 1814, architecte niçois, a obtenu un diplôme de géomètre à Turin avant d'être nommé architecte de la Ville. Les plans qu'il propose pour le nouvel opéra sont approuvés par Charles Garnier, alors Inspecteur des Bâtiments Civils.
François Aune, élève de Gustave Eiffel, bâtit une enveloppe en maçonnerie traditionnelle à base de pierres, de briques et de chaux, à l'intérieur de laquelle il établit une structure de poutrelles métalliques.
En 1902, le Théatre municipal prend le nom que nous lui connaissons aujourd'hui : Opéra de Nice.
Quelques éléments ont changé dans cet édifice depuis l'origine. Ainsi de l'entrée principale, qui débouchait sur un vaste escalier inscrit dans la rotonde du Théâtre, transférée rue Saint-François-de-Paule.
De même, le proscenium a-t-il été diminué, le grand lustre supprimé, puis rétabli en 1960 (il compte 600 lampes), le parterre agrandi, les peintures de l'entrée remplacées par de grands miroirs.
La cage de scène a été refaite et modernisée en 1979. Aujourd'hui, la fosse d'orchestre, grâce à son plateau mobile, permet d'augmenter très sensiblement le nombre de musiciens pour les concerts et autorise l'interprétation d'un répertoire plus large.
Le Théâtre a été classé monument historique en 1993.
Au 19e siècle, Nice devint un lieu de séjour hivernal pour l'aristocratie européenne et son Opéra bénéficia pleinement de cet engouement. Les grands chanteurs et les grands compositeurs se succédèrent donc sur cette scène. "
