Originally a single-storey shop and dining room built in 1879, after substantial extensions in 1890 the parapeted, two-storey and stuccoed brick building became the Castlemaine Coffee Palace, renamed Midland Hotel in the 1940's. The feature of the hotel is the verandah which is decorated with three patterns of cast iron, the upper frieze employs a combination of ferns and acanthus, the balustrade uses Gothic motifs and the lower frieze is based on the sunflower.
