Het zijn natuurlijk niet enkel de Indische Nederlanders die terug willen denken aan hun tijd in de Oost. Ook voor de militairen die destijds naar Nederlands-Indië werden gezonden zijn de ervaringen van toen vaak van grote invloed op hun verdere leven. Ook zij willen gedenken.

Op 8 november 1997 wordt aan de Sluisweg in Hardinxveld-Giessendam een afzonderlijk monument onthuld ter nagedachtenis aan de dorpsgenoten die tussen 1945 en 1950 omkwamen tijdens hun krijgsdienst in Nederlands-Indië. Tussen 1945 en 1952 komen ook vijf Gorinchemers om in de Oost. In 1998 vatten drie oud-Indiëgangers het plan op om te komen tot het oprichten van een monument in Gorinchem.

C.B. de Lang, voorzitter van het comité dat het initiatief neemt, erkent in De Dordtenaar van 27 mei 1998 dat het rijkelijk laat is een dergelijk monument op te richten. De late oprichting heeft volgens De Lang, die zelf met de 7 December-divisie van oktober 1946 tot januari 1950 in NederlandsIndië verbleef, alles te maken met de pas de laatste jaren op gang komende emancipatie van de oud-strijders. “Het is een vergeten oorlog. We werden door de regering gestuurd, maar bij terugkomst niet met open armen ontvangen. Als er al over ons werd gesproken, werden we vaak afgeschilderd als oorlogsmisdadigers. In de media is uitsluitend aandacht besteed aan de uitwassen. Natuurlijk zijn er dingen fout gegaan, maar wat wil je als je er 150.000 soldaten naar toe stuurt..”, aldus De Lang.

Het comité krijgt steun van burgemeester IJssels. Gorcums eerste burger voelt er echter niets voor het monument naast het oorlogsmonument Buiten de Waterpoort te plaatsen of dit monument uit te breiden. “Ik vind het niet verstandig om beide monumenten te koppelen, omdat het om twee totaal verschillende oorlogen gaat. In Nederlands-Indië waren wij de koloniale overweldigers, dat is iets heel anders dan de strijd tegen de Duitse bezetter tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog,” aldus IJssels in de Dordtenaar van 30 mei 1998. De Lang deelt deze mening niet. “De positie van Nederland doet niet ter zake als je daar sneuvelt. We werden door de regering uitgezonden en je had maar te gaan”, aldus de voorzitter van het comité.

Uiteindelijk komt er toestemming voor het plaatsen van het monument in het parkje nabij het Paardenwater. Op zaterdag 18 september 1999 vindt de onthulling van het gedenkteken plaats. Het gedenkteken is van de hand van beeldhouwer Marcus Ravenswaay en uitgevoerd in natuursteen. In het midden zit een scheur die de verscheurde eenheid in de politieke, maar ook in de menselijke verhoudingen symboliseert. De vijf kruizen verwijzen naar de gestorven plaatsgenoten, net zoals de toren naar hun woonplaats verwijst. De rokende vulkaan omringd door sawa’s staat symbool voor Nederlands-Indië. Op de steen komt de neutrale tekst: “Zij werden geroepen…maar keerden niet terug.”110 De Lang en zijn medestrijders hebben hun doel bereikt. Hun kameraden zullen nooit worden vergeten.

It is of course not only the Indo-Dutch who want to think back to their time in the East. For the soldiers who were sent to the Dutch East Indies at the time, the experiences of that time often have a major influence on their further lives. They also want to remember.

On November 8, 1997, a separate monument was unveiled on Sluisweg in Hardinxveld-Giessendam in memory of the villagers who died between 1945 and 1950 during their military service in the Dutch East Indies. Between 1945 and 1952, five Gorinchems also died in the East. In 1998, three former Indians conceived a plan to erect a monument in Gorinchem.

C.B. de Lang, chairman of the committee that takes the initiative, acknowledges in De Dordtenaar of 27 May 1998 that it is very late to erect such a monument. According to De Lang, who himself stayed in the Dutch East Indies with the 7 December division from October 1946 to January 1950, the late establishment has everything to do with the emancipation of the former combatants that only started in recent years. “It is a forgotten war. We were sent by the government, but not welcomed with open arms when we returned. When we were talked about, we were often portrayed as war criminals. The media paid only attention to the excesses. Of course things have gone wrong, but what do you want if you send 150,000 soldiers there.”, says De Lang.

The committee is supported by mayor IJssels. Gorcum's first citizen, however, does not feel like placing the monument next to the war memorial Buiten de Waterpoort or expanding this monument. “I don't think it's wise to link both monuments, because they are two completely different wars. In the Dutch East Indies we were the colonial usurpers, which is something very different from the struggle against the German occupier during the Second World War,” said IJssels in the Dordtenaar of 30 May 1998. De Lang does not share this opinion. “The position of the Netherlands is irrelevant if you die there. We were sent out by the government and you had to go," said the committee chairman.

Eventually permission will be given to place the monument in the park near Paardenwater. The unveiling of the memorial will take place on Saturday September 18, 1999. The memorial was designed by sculptor Marcus Ravenswaay and made of natural stone. In the middle is a crack that symbolizes the torn unity in political, but also in human relations. The five crosses refer to the deceased villagers, just as the tower refers to their hometown. The smoking volcano surrounded by sawas is a symbol of the Dutch East Indies. The stone bears the neutral text: “They were called…but did not return.”110 De Lang and his fellow combatants have achieved their goal. Their comrades will never be forgotten.
