Baseball Hall of Famer Yogi Berra played on more pennant-winning teams (14) and more championship teams (10) than any other player in major league history. He was named to the All-Star team 15 times and was thrice named American League Most Valuable Player - unprecedented for a catcher. He was the first player to hit a pinch-hit home run in a World Series game, caught Don Larsen’s World Series perfect game and fielded 1.000 in 1958 - a nearly impossible achievement.

After an 18-year career as a player with the New York Yankees, Berra managed or coached in the major leagues with the Yankees, NY Mets and Houston Astros. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972 and his number (8) was retired by the Yankees.

Everyone has heard various ‘Yogi-isms’ such as “a nickel ain’t worth a dime anymore” or “It's déjà vu all over again.” So, I thought I’d include a few quotes about Yogi Berra by some of his contemporaries:

“Why has our pitching been so great? Our catcher, that's why. He looks cumbersome but he's quick as a cat.” - Casey Stengel (Yankee manager)

“He seemed to be doing everything wrong, yet everything came out right. He stopped everything behind the plate and hit everything in front of it.” - Mel Ott

“Yogi had the fastest bat I ever saw. He could hit a ball late, that was already past him, and take it out of the park.” - Hector Lopez

“They say he's funny. Well, he has a lovely wife and family, a beautiful home, money in the bank, and he plays golf with millionaires. What's funny about that?” - Casey Stengel
