The Marine 6 William H. Connerton, Jr. Fire/Rescue/CBRNE (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosive) boat is moored at Perrotti Park Harbor Shuttle and Ferry Landing in Newport, Rhode Island. It is named for William H. Connerton, Jr., a former firefighter who retired as Newport Fire Department chief in 1980. His son, Peter Connerton, was chief at the time of the $1,155,000 vessel acquisition decision in 2017. The official christening of the new vessel was scheduled for May 5, 2018, at 10:00AM at Perrotti Park.
The 37 foot (11 m) catamaran is propelled by water jets and powered by a pair of 425 shaft horsepower (317 kW) diesel engines. Her two water cannon can project a combined 3000 gallons per minute. Her electronics suite includes sidescan sonar, a thermal camera, and an EKG monitor for rescuing and treating the injured. Her airtight cabin is designed not only to protect her crew from smoke, but also against radiological, biological or chemical attacks. When not fighting fires she is equipped for supporting divers for body recovery. Her thermal camera can also pick out the thermal signature of boaters who have fallen overboard, when engaged on search and rescue missions.
