This flora and fauna information sign is one of two that are located near the wooden bridge over the Freshwater Slough that leads to a hiking trail at the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge near Austwell Texas.

The waymarked sign reads as follows:

"FRESHWATER SLOUGH

The majority of freshwater at Aransas National Wildlife Refuge comes from rainwater. On average, the Refuge receives 38 inches of rain per year.

Evaporation during the hot summer results in critical shortages of freshwater. Replenished by tropical storms, freshwater provides wildlife with opportunities to invest in the black willows, cattails and bulrushes.

Less than 1% of the world is covered by freshwater and most animals need it to survive. Many species of wildlife are dependent on freshwater slough’s, ponds, and marshes as they provide water for wildlife throughout the year.

Walking trails

The 0.5 mile Rail Trail and the 1.5 mile Heron Flats trail provide excellent opportunities to see wildlife. These trails meander through freshwater ponds and sloughs that provide homes for wildlife. Look for rails, reddish egrets, great blue herons, red eared sliders, and Eastern yellow bellied racers. Keep quiet, take your time, and look closely. You may be surprised by what you find! As you hike, please use caution as alligators can be found in the ponds and often sun themselves on earth and berms adjacent to the trails.
