Icarus was flying too close to the sun when he crashed back to earth. This famous event is, strangely, commemorated by this fine statue outside the departures concourses of Melbourne Airport.

First built in 1970 by John Dowie, this statue used to be in the International departures concourse but was later moved to a sculpture park.

In 2020, it was moved to be outsde the departures concourse for both International and Domestic.

Icarus was the famous winged creature who failed to follow the warning to not fly too close to the sun and fell to earth.
