The Place:
McCord Memorial Library is located on the corner of West Main and Park Streets in North East, Pennsylvania. The library was built in 1916, expanded in 1975, and was made wheelchair accessible with the addition of an elevator in 1992. The library was funded by the North East School Board for many years, but since 1970 it has been funded by a direct township tax, as well as private donations. The library's collection holds over 40,000 items. The library partners with the other libraries in Erie County for lending purposes. Visitors with children are encouraged to visit the extensive children's library on the ground floor.

The Person:
Construction of the library was funded by, and thus named after, John McCord, a Chicago businessman and former resident of North East. When McCord died in January 1912, he unexpectedly left $25,000 for the purpose of building a library in his former hometown. Construction on the library began in 1915 and was overseen by McCord's sons, Jay and Downer.
